AAPA outlines PA advocacy goals for Capitol Hill Day
Supreme Court upholds the Affordable Care Act
Washington, D.C. – The IMPACT 213 advocacy rally to promote physician assistants as a key part of the solution the healthcare workforce shortage will be taking place Wednesday at 9:30 AM on Capitol Hill, and the American Academy of Physician Assistants has outlined several key objectives for PAs to discuss with federal legislators.
First, AAPA is seeking to eliminate unnecessary federal barriers to the quality of medical care PAs provide by advocating for the following changes:
- Allowing PAs to serve Medicare hospice patients
- Allowing PAs to order home health services
- Replacing the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula with a workable Medicare payment system Updating the Federal Workers' Compensation Program to allow PAs to diagnose and treat injured employees.
Second, AAPA is seeking legislative initiatives to integrate PAs into federal programs designed to promote growth in the healthcare workforce by increasing funding support for PA educational programs and inclusion in Medicare's Graduate Medical Education Program.
The AAPA's third goal is promoting transparency, recognition and accountability for medical care provided by PAs. The organization is urging the following technical changes to fully utilize PAs in all healthcare settings:
- Updating Medicare regulation to ensure full PA supplier status
- Implementing Office of Personnel Management qualification and classification standards for federally employed PAs
- Promoting pay equity for federally employed PAs
- Amending Medicaid to encourage enrollment of PAS and recognition of PAs as primary care case managers
Prior to the rally AAPA will host an advocacy general session at IMPACT 2013, Wednesday, May 29th from 8 am to 9 am.
