Jeff Callard named 2013 Outstanding PA of the Year
Washington, DC – The 2013 PAragon Award for Outstanding Physician Assistant of the Year goes to Jeff Callard, PA-C, founder of the Society of Emergency Physician Assistants.
This award honors a PA who demonstrates exemplary service to the profession and the community and furthers the image of PAs.
Cynthia Booth Lord, PA-C, MHS, the PA program director at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, presented the honor, citing Callard as living proof of the great things PAs are capable of at IMPACT 2013.
“There's nothing that can stand in our way right now,” Lord said, likening the PA profession to a freight train.
Callard began his career as a PA in 1988 and has since become a dedicated leader, building key alliances and cultivating the next generation of clinicians. After settling on a specialization in emergency medicine, Callard pursued various leadership roles, first with the Michigan Academy of Physician Assistants and later as a liaison to the American College of Emergency Physicians.
He was also a founding member of the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants, formed in 1991. Thanks to Callard's leadership, PAs and physicians now work together regularly on legislative issues that affect emergency medicine healthcare providers.
In addition to his clinical duties, Callard currently works as a preceptor and educational coordinator at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he is also the lead administrative PA in the ED. He has precepted more than 100 students and has taught many more in his role as adjunct faculty at Wayne State University, in Detroit. Callard is also the first PA to serve on the board of directors of his medical group.
