What is the best location to sample when obtaining a punch biopsy from a potential dysplastic nevus or malignant melanoma?

If possible, sampling of a pigmented skin lesion should include the portion that is either the thickest or the darkest or both. For patients who have larger lesions, more than one biopsy specimen might be considered.
