Answer: E. A variety of retrospective studies have revealed an association between hyperglycemia and adverse clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients, including increased risk for deep sternal wound infections in patients undergoing open heart procedures, increased nosocomial infections in surgical patients, and increased in-hospital mortality in previously non-diabetic patents. The same can be true for hypoglycemia, as a study revealed increased mortality when tighter glycemic control was obtained among adult patients in the ICU.
