in the treatment of pain. To minimize the risk of abuse and addiction, evidence-based prescribing practices must be used when treating acute and chronic pain with opioids.

Statement of Need: Substance use disorder has become a growing concern in the United States thanks to changes in prescribing practices. To effectively minimize substance use disorder, a thorough pain assessment is used to determine when treatment of pain with opioids is appropriate. Once that determination has been made, the clinician must follow evidence-based prescribing practices to maximize safety when prescribing these medications.

Target Audience: This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of primary-care physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who treat patients with substance use disorder.

Learning Objectives: After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Explain how changes in prescribing practices have affected the rise in opioid abuse.
  • Describe the five schedules of controlled substances.
  • Review the components of a comprehensive pain assessment.
  • Identify the potential patient risks associated with prescribing opioid medications.
  • Discuss appropriate prescribing practices as they pertain to opioid medications.
