The patient was a 52-year-old white man with no significant past medical history who presented to the dermatology clinic for evaluation of an asymptomatic reticulated red-brown patch that had first appeared on his lower back approximately one week earlier. His only other complaint was recent exacerbation of his chronic lower back pain. He had been applying a menthol cream and using a heating pad nightly for symptomatic relief during the past several weeks.
