This patient has congenital methemoglobinemia. This condition is characterized by increased levels of methemoglobin, a naturally occurring form of hemoglobin that has an impaired ability to bind to oxygen. Patients with methemoglobinemia typically experience life-long cyanosis and symptoms are proportional to the patient's methemoglobin level.
