This barium swallow demonstrates a Zenker diverticulum, a pouch that forms in the hypopharynx above the upper esophageal sphincter due to high pharyngeal pressures. Patients are typically elderly, and they can present with halitosis, dysphagia, regurgitation, or recurrent pneumonias as a result of aspiration. These lesions are surgically correctable, often with good results.
