Program Description

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory, immune-mediated disease typically characterized by chronic synovial inflammation and hyperplasia, which drives articular destruction and bone erosion that can lead to functional decline and disability. Further complicating a diagnosis of RA is the presence of comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease. Comborbidities in RA patients not only limit therapeutic options for the primary disease, but also decrease general quality of life (QoL) and worsen outcomes. This case depicts a patient who is showing early signs of RA and also is at risk of cardiovascular disease.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for rheumatologists and other healthcare professionals such as primary care physicians, internists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, advanced practice nurses, and nurses who care for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Describe updates from the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) and the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) guidelines, and apply appropriate new recommendations into clinical practice
  • Employ the “treat-to-target” approach to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) management via incorporation of routine use of validated composite disease-activity measures, biomarkers, and instruments
  • Compare and contrast efficacy, safety, and tolerability of available biologic agents used in the presence of disease- and patient-related variables, such as comorbidities, risk tolerance, and dosing convenience
  • Utilize effective communication and education to engage RA patients in shared decision-making on treatment choices
