Diabetes program helped beat cancer

Our clinic recently initiated a diabetes counseling program. As a part of this program we are encouraging our patients to keep up with all of their age-appropriate interventions. The particular patient I was counseling had avoided her annual Pap exam for more than six years due to obesity. I encouraged her to have the test, explaining that this was a critical part of her health and a very necessary part of screening. She relented and scheduled an appointment.

It was discovered during this screening that the patient had early uterine cancer. A hysterectomy was performed, and the patient has fully recovered and is now cancer-free.

I believe we have the opportunity each and every day to make a difference in large and small ways by encouraging our patients to take part in screenings and intervention programs. I am very proud that I was able to encourage my patient to set aside her fears and get a lifesaving screen before it was too late.
