Slaying the gag reflex

When performing a rapid strep test or throat culture, instruct the patient to take a deep breath through the mouth just prior to placing the tongue depressor on the tongue. When obtaining the specimen, instruct the patient to exhale forcefully through the mouth, "like a dragon." This lowers the tongue while decreasing the gag reflex.—WILLIAM M.
