Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are some of the most commonly prescribed medications for gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-associated gastric ulcers. PPIs are also available over the counter (OTC) for short-term use in managing heartburn experienced twice weekly.
