A black heel lesion proves worrisome

A 20-year-old white college student comes to the office after noticing a dark “mole” on the posterior lateral aspect of his heel about two weeks before. He nervously reports that his girlfriend’s uncle died six months after noticing a dark mole. The young man has no similar lesions, although he received liquid nitrogen therapy for a wart on the same foot when he was in high school. He takes no medications and is never sick. A full-time student, he plays intramural basketball and runs a mile any day he doesn’t play hoops.
