Narcan® (naloxone HCl) Nasal Spray will be available for over-the-counter (OTC) emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose beginning in September.
Narcan Nasal Spray is an opioid antagonist that reverses the effects of opioids, including respiratory depression, sedation, and hypotension. The approval for nonprescription use was supported by more than 7 years of postmarketing data demonstrating the safety and efficacy of Narcan, along with human factors studies.
Studies showed that consumers were able to understand how to use Narcan safely and effectively without supervision by a health care provider.

The OTC product is supplied in a 4mg dosage strength using the same device as the prescription product. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $44.99 per carton; each carton contains 2 doses.
