Individuals on fluid or sodium restriction should think of their daily allowance as the balance in a checkbook. For example, start out with 50 oz and subtract each time you drink some fluid. Or start with 2,000 mg and subtract the sodium content of your food. The patient will always know how much is left. Remind them not to overdraw the account. Just think of the penalties! — Terese Prentice, NP, Skillman, N.J. (156-11)
