When removing a chest tube, first stack a Xeroform Petrolatum gauze dressing on a nonadhesive dressing. Tape three sides of the dressing over the tube with foam tape. While keeping a fourth piece of tape ready, snip the sutures holding the tube in place. Put gentle pressure on the dressing with one hand while swiftly pulling out the chest tube as the patient takes a deep breath. Keep the dressing hand in place while you apply tape to the remaining side of the gauze. You will be pleased with the postprocedure chest x-ray every time.
