Statement of Need: Knowledge is needed in understanding, communicating, and implementing primary prevention and secondary screening for communicable diseases, along with referencing evidence-based practice standards and guidelines from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), local and state health departments, the CDC, and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
Target Audience: This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of primary care health care professionals who will treat persons who have an infectious disease.
Learning Objectives: After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Discuss trends in infectious disease and the steps in an outbreak investigation
- Apply knowledge of primary prevention techniques such as hand, respiratory, and environmental hygiene, age-appropriate vaccination, and isolation precautions to control and prevent the transmission of infectious diseases
- Analyze risk assessment and screening for communicable disease in asymptomatic patients following the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidelines
- Assess the appropriate use of antibiotics to prevent multi-drug resistance infections

MER is a provider of continuing nursing education by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP 12299, for 0.5 contact hour.
This activity qualifies for 0.10 pharmacotherapy credit.
American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA)
The AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 0.5 hour of Category I credit for completing this program.
