What vitamin or mineral supplements are most important for patients who have type 2 diabetes?
—Suzanne L. Skrypak, CRNP, MSN, Canonsburg, Pa.

Although the American Diabetes Association does not routinely recommend any supplementation of vitamins and minerals, there are studies that show potential metabolic benefits for several. One review article (Diabetes Educ. 1992;18:420-427) lists the following as having potential benefit and very low risk: vitamin B6, vitamin B12, niacin, vitamin C, and magnesium. Other sources note additional supplementation of copper, coenzyme Q10, and chromium.
