How can I best practice evidence-based medicine while adhering to practice guidelines?
—Jay H. Kozlowski, MD, Commerce Twp., Mich.
Clinical practice guidelines were initially developed to minimize practice variation and increase adherence to proven interventions. Before a guideline is released, an extensive review of the current pertinent medical evidence is completed. Rest assured that if you are adhering to practice guidelines and varying from them only to the extent that the guidelines are not consistent with your patient’s preferences, you are indeed practicing evidence-based medicine.
