Answer: B.  The incidence of vitamin B12 deficiencies may range from 26% to70%.  Often this complication will not be seen until several years after surgery. This is due to the large liver stores of vitamin B12, which are slowly depleted if the patient does not have adequate vitamin B12 prophylactic doses post bariatric surgery. The American Academy of Family Physicians currently recommends 1,000 mcg of sublingual vitamin B12 daily for post-bariatric patients. It can also be given via monthly injections of 1,000 mcg. If a patient develops neurological symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency, the symptoms may stabilize with the repletion of the vitamin B12 stores but do not always improve.
