Las Vegas – Difficulties balancing clinical practice and fulfilling obligations to academic nursing programs are common when nurse practitioners take on academic roles.

Many ARNPs choose teaching and leave practice when they struggle to combine to the two roles, or some faculty may choose to return to private practice for a more competitive salary. Implementing collaborative faculty practice models may offer a potential solution, according to researchers at the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) 2013 National Conference.

Alicia Huckstadt, PhD, ARNP, and Karen Hayes, PhD, ARNP, both of the School of Nursing at Wichita State University’s College of Health Professionals outlined several ways faculty practice models can help ARNPs achieve teaching, service and research goals.

Benefits of faculty practiced models include enabling ARNPs to maintain practice hours necessary for national certification, boosting faculty salaries, extending evidence-based healthcare to the community, enhancing clinical knowledge for teaching, legitimizing faculty members to students, and providing preceptor exemplars and additional research opportunities for students.

“Faculty practice is a contractual agreement with defined and clear boundaries that puts patient care as the focus. It consists of a collaborative partnership between practice and teaching that benefits both roles,” they explained.

Contractual negotiation takes place between the faculty member, an employing agency and the school chairperson. Funds are generally administered with 40% allocated to faculty salary, 40% allocated to the practice fund, which can be drawn for professional expenditures, and 20% allocated to administrative costs.

Stakeholders then work together to tailor a practice plan for the faculty member that is consistent with the academic center’s policies. There are several ways faculty practice models can be implemented:

  • A clinical facilities in which faculty jointly serve as clinicians and educators
  • A scenario in which the faculty’s primary role is with the school of nursing, but he or she may share appointment in clinical arena
  • An integrated model in which faculty and graduates students share patient care responsibilities
  • An entrepreneurial model in which faculty design their practice and provide client services as part of his or her faculty duties model or private practice

A faculty practice council, consisting of all faculty members engaged within a practice, handles responsibilities such as making decisions regarding practice policies and procedures, providing counsel to the academic nursing school, monitoring revenues and expenditures, and insuring faculty practice members are included in tenure, promotion and merit programs.

“Implementing faculty practice models enables the development and demonstration of expert models of nursing practice, while enhancing student experiences with faculty mentorship,” Huckstadt and Hayes said.
