Use of a template to facilitate shared decision making in medication therapy management (MTM) is effective, according to research published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association.

Katherine M Schafer, PharmD, and colleagues conducted a study to evaluate the potential efficacy, feasibility, and acceptability of using a template-based intervention to facilitate shared decision making in MTM consultations at an internal medicine clinic.

The researchers analyzed patients’ electronic health record use during the intervention, as well as post-appointment surveys administered to patients and pharmacists to determine the potential efficacy of shared decision making. Twenty patients and 4 pharmacists participated in the study, and the researchers found that patients and pharmacists “appreciated the intervention,” Dr Schafer wrote.

“Some pharmacists had concerns including consultation length and shared decision making applicability,” Dr Schafer noted. “On average, 2 drug therapy problems (DTPs) were identified per consultation, and were most commonly related to appropriate compliance, appropriate indication, medication effectiveness, and safety.”

“Using a template … appears to be effective, feasible, and acceptable,” Dr Schafer concluded. “DTP identification exemplifies a potential application of template-guided shared decision making.”
