This phototoxic reaction is caused by topical exposure to furocoumarin-containing plants, commonly limes, celery, and wild parsnip. When furocoumarins are exposed to ultraviolet A light, cutaneous inflammation may occur. The reaction is self-limited and can be prevented by avoidance.
