The Boston type 1 keratoprosthesis, an artificial cornea, is typically used when other treatments for corneal disease, such as transplants, have failed. The device consists of a front and back plate with donor corneal tissue sandwiched in between, and it is sutured into the eye in a similar way to a traditional corneal graft.
