Image of the Week: When a spider bite is left untreated

This ulcer likely resulted from envenomation by a brown recluse, a spider most often found in North and South America. Typically, the resulting lesion is self-limiting. In a minority of cases, it can become necrotic over the course of several days and usually enlarges in a gravitationally dependent manner, as was the case here.
