This 37-year-old musician was diagnosed with right temporal lobe epilepsy. Functional magnetic resonance imaging indicated his musical association cortex would be at risk during conventional neurosurgery. To maximally preserve his abilities, he was kept awake during surgery and asked to identify musical notes produced by an iPhone.
