This patient was diagnosed with the swine flu, which can cause acute respiratory distress. In extreme cases, in which ordinary mechanical ventilation is not sufficient, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can be introduced. ECMO is a type of mechanical cardiopulmonary support that circulates blood through a pump and an external oxygenator, and then reinfuses it into circulation.
